Phase 2 of The House Behind The Trees ~ The downstairs #TeelsBuildaHouse

So we are starting the downstairs ... I HATE to say basement because we had a basement in our old home, where you opened a door and went down stairs separated from anything else. It was a finished basement complete with a bedroom, craft room, family/game room and we spent a lot of time there ~ our oldest son moved down there in jr high and stayed through high school ... until we finished the master suite in the attic then he moved back up to the bedroom floor with his brother and sister.  So here our downstairs is open to the rest of the house, you can see through to the outside from the top of the stairs going down because we have a wall of windows down there as well.  We really didn't plan to have a kiddo down there but since we are having to do a switch-a-roo with rooms (I'll explain later) he is moving home soon and will be downstairs. Anyhoo, our downstairs will house our main family room, our middle sons room, a full bath and kitchenette.  I thought it would be fun ...

Reading Nook ~ it's finally getting finished! Shop my home

So we created this space that that we wanted to have as a get away to read a book, play a game, take a nap or catch a movie.  It is a built in alcove in the upstairs hallway that overlooks the entryway.  My problem was that I had too many ideas for this space once it was done, I really started leaning towards a library nook rather than a hangout nook.  Now I'm not opposed to doing a library at a later time because I also think that would loo awesome in this space, but for now I went with what we initially created this space to be which was a reading/hangout nook (especially for our grandkids) .... I mean who doesn't want a sofa bed in a loft area with window opposite to watch the rain, snow or sun! (Shopping deets at the bottom of the page)

This space initially came about because we had a room in our rental house were we converted a twin bed into a daybed and used it a lot to watch tv, read and/or nap (pic below).  We used that room so much that I asked if we could carve out some space in the upstairs of our new home to have a similar space and my fabulous husband made it happen!

So after talking with the kids, a few  friends and some of my IG decor peeps, we decided to keep it as a hangout nook for now and see how often we use it.  Getting this area done right before summer though might not be a good judge of how often we will hang here since most of our time will be spent in our outdoor living room and pool.  I truly think these kinds of spaces are better used during rainy weather when you can't go outside or in the winter when you want to feel comfy, cozy and cocooned in a relaxing environment.

I'll share again when we have the pulls on the drawers, the TV installed and the decor where it should actually go and not just sitting on the shelf to be off the floor! Tell mw what you would have done in this space or if you have another suggestion other than a library or hangout nook.
