Phase 2 of The House Behind The Trees ~ The downstairs #TeelsBuildaHouse

So we are starting the downstairs ... I HATE to say basement because we had a basement in our old home, where you opened a door and went down stairs separated from anything else. It was a finished basement complete with a bedroom, craft room, family/game room and we spent a lot of time there ~ our oldest son moved down there in jr high and stayed through high school ... until we finished the master suite in the attic then he moved back up to the bedroom floor with his brother and sister.  So here our downstairs is open to the rest of the house, you can see through to the outside from the top of the stairs going down because we have a wall of windows down there as well.  We really didn't plan to have a kiddo down there but since we are having to do a switch-a-roo with rooms (I'll explain later) he is moving home soon and will be downstairs. Anyhoo, our downstairs will house our main family room, our middle sons room, a full bath and kitchenette.  I thought it would be fun ...

Most of us will be celebrating in some fashion the July 4th holiday and here are some cocktail recipes that will be a hit .... they are equally good without the alcohol.

These Red White Blue Cocktails or Mocktails will be a hit for ALL your guests during your 4th of July celebrations!

Watermelon Mint Mojito
So here’s how you do it: In the bottom of a tall glass, muddle fresh mint leaves along with some fresh lime juice and simple syrup. Once that’s mixed together, fill the glass most of the way with ice. Pour in the light rum and watermelon juice (juice from a watermelon🍉 and fill the glass with club soda. Garnish with a sprig of mint and/or a wedge of watermelon, and sip sip sip. Omit rum for mocktail version.

White Peach Sangria
So here’s how you do it: If you do not have peach flavored vodka you can substitute regular vodka + peach schnapps. If using fresh peaches, slice and add to a serving pitcher but if you are using frozen, just open the bag and dump them all in, about 2 cups, no need to thaw! Then add the peach flavored vodka (or vodka + peach schnapps) and the entire bottle of wine. Use white grape juice instead of wine and omit vodka for mocktail.

Blueberry Mint Julep
So here's how you do it: Combine sugar 1/3 cup, 1/3 cup water and 1 bunch of mint leaves together in a small saucepan and heat over high heat until boiling, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low and cook for another minute or so, then set aside to cool completely. Remove mint before using. In a blender, combine 1/2 cup blueberries and mint simple syrup until pureed. Combine 2 ounces of bourbon, mint simple syrup (or plain if you can't find mint flavored), mint blueberry puree together and shake or stir really well. Pour over crushed iced and serve with extra mint leaves. Just omit the Bourbon for a mocktail.
